Is anesthesia safe? PDF Print E-mail

Review of our anesthesia literature has shown us that anesthesia is safer more so than a generation ago. Serious complications from anesthesia are very low, and have declined dramatically over the last 25 years with advancements in our monitoring technologies, the development of safer anesthetic medications and continued improvement in our anesthesia specialty education and training which translates into more enhanced medical knowledge. Anesthesia risk differs for each person undergoing his or her operation. Your surgical and anesthetic risk will be influenced by the type of surgery you will undergo (the larger the operation, the greater the risk) and your health (the unhealthier the person undergoing the operation, the greater the risk). Please discuss your surgical and anesthesia risk with your surgeon and your anesthesiologist.
